My first mobile app! March 21st, 2012
So finally after a year and a half I finally get to post about a project completed at Intelligent Environments. I’ve been working at IE since November 2010 and a considerable chunk of that time has been taken up working on our Mobile offerings, which now include mobile web (possibly the subject of a future post) and native iPhone and Android apps. Our latest release was the Capital One branded credit card apps. These are now available on the Android Marketplace and iTunes respectively and both are doing very well.
I was working alongside the R&D team at IE building and skinning the app front ends as they built the services and plugged them in. I was using Eclipse for the Android and Xcode for the iPhone apps and learnt a fair bit about both as well as gaining a small amount of experience in Java and Objective-C.
Functionality in the apps include account overview, transactions and transaction history, card payments and FAQs.
To date, between them, the apps have 49,956 registered users. 60,684 registered devices and 517,417 successfull logins. As of the publish time of this post the Android app has an overall rating of 3.5 stars on Google Play (formerly Android Marketplace) and 3 stars on iTunes. This may not seem that great but when you bear in mind that most of the negative reviews have been based purely on the fact that it doesn’t work on rooted phones it doesn’t seem so bad. I’m not sure why so many people have flagged this as an issue. It’s intentionally disabled because it’s so difficult to ensure security on a rooted device.
Anyway, this is my first attempt at a mobile app and overall i’m pretty please with how it went. I’ll look forward to building a few more in the future.
